Victory sends Nebraska to Big 12 title game

Nebraska running back Rex Burkhead (22) leaps over teammate, offensive linesman Keith Williams (68), with Kyler Reed (25) and Tyler Legate (48), as Colorado linebacker Liloa Nobriga (48) is on the ground, during the first half of an NCAA college football game, in Lincoln, Neb., Friday, Nov. 26, 2010.

LINCOLN, Neb. | Finality was the game’s theme, but Nebraska’s 45-17 triumph over Colorado means the Cornhuskers live to play another Big 12 game.
The outcome sends Nebraska to the conference championship next week in Arlington, Texas, with an opportunity to get the last laugh in the Big 12 before beginning a new life in the Big Ten.
Missouri can catch the Cornhuskers in conference record at 6-2 with a Border War conquest of Kansas today at Arrowhead Stadium. But Nebraska’s triumph over the Tigers breaks a tie.
For Colorado, the season concludes with a 5-7 record, and a new existence begins in the Pac-12. Perhaps the next time the Buffaloes would meet Nebraska is in a Rose Bowl.
And who knows? Maybe in the spirit of newness, Friday marked a calmer demeanor for the Pelini brothers, head coach Bo and defensive coordinator Carl, whose gasket-blowing antics brought reprimands from Nebraska chancellor Harvey Perlman and athletic director Tom Osborne.
No volcanic behavior this time, and even offensive coordinator Shawn Watson, cheap NFL Jerseys under fire for the Cornhuskers lethargic offense over the past few weeks, got to take bow.
Nebraska posted its largest point total in more than a month and did it without injured starting quarterback Taylor Martinez taking a snap. The Cornhuskers were so creative that running back Rex Burkhead threw two — count ‘em, two — touchdown passes.
Burkhead added 101 rushing yards and a touchdown run on a day when Nebraska was never threatened.
The Cornhuskers led 17-3 at halftime and put it away with a 21-point third quarter.
Nebraska’s opponent in its second straight Big 12 title game appearance and sixth since the conference started 15 years ago, likely will be the winner of Saturday night’s Oklahoma at Oklahoma State game.
It’s the Cowboys if they win because Oklahoma State would take the South Division Wholesale NFL Jerseys outright. And there would be a revenge factor for the Pokes, who lost to Nebraska 51-41 in Stillwater on Oct. 23.
If Oklahoma wins, the South will end in a three-way tie among the Sooners, Oklahoma State and Texas A&M and the tie-breaker is the BCS standing.
It’s probable that an Oklahoma victory would propel to Sooners to the top of that chart and the curtain would come down on the Big 12 championship game with a game between historic rivals.

Avalanche beat Blues for 5th straight time

DENVER (AP)—John-Michael Liles(notes) punched in a couple of rare goals and Matt Duchene(notes) landed the haymakers.
Both got the crowd and the Colorado Avalanche cheap football jerseys going in a 6-3 win over the struggling St. Louis Blues on Monday night.
Not known as a goal scorer, Liles had two in the first period to ignite the Avalanche.
Hardly known as a fighter, Duchene traded punches with Vladimir Sobotka(notes) in the third period and then smiled as he sat in the penalty box, his picture flashing across the big screen.
“I haven’t been scoring with my hands too much, might as well do something else with them,” Duchene said, laughing.
Duchene’s skirmish drew the loudest cheers of the evening, despite all the goal scoring. He said that Sobotka asked him if he wanted to drop the gloves and Duchene gladly obliged in this chippy contest.
“He’s strong,” said Duchene, who admitted he hadn’t been in a fight since juniors. “It was tough to get a hold of him, his jersey kept coming up.”
Duchene’s late-game scuffle didn’t completely overshadow the offensive production by Liles, who had his first multigoal game since 2006.
“I’m just happy to chip in on the score sheet,” Liles said. “When the points happen, they happen. It’s kind of just trying to jump in, use my legs and help the forwards out.”
The Avalanche forwards were in fine form as Colorado beat the Blues for a fifth straight time.
Brandon Yip(notes) and David Jones(notes) scored 17 seconds apart in the second period. Paul Stastny(notes) and Kevin Porter(notes) also added goals.
If that wasn’t enough production, fellow forwards Denver Broncos jerseys Milan Hejduk(notes) and Chris Stewart(notes) each had two assists.
“There was a lot of energy coming off the bench and we just took advantage of our chances,” Stastny said.
Alexander Steen scored 54 seconds in, Carlo Colaiacovo(notes) added a goal, and Brad Boyes(notes) had one on a power play, but St. Louis lost its fourth straight.
“We weren’t going to go 82-0,” Steen said. “It seems that every time we got one they got one going the other way. This is a tough one to swallow.”
Peter Budaj(notes) bested Jaroslav Halak(notes), who came in allowing 1.79 goals a game but surrendered a season-high six.
The two goalies were teammates for Slovakia at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, lifting the squad to a fourth-place finish.
“He’s playing well this year,” said Budaj, who had 27 saves. “I think our team was a little more hungry, especially in the first and second periods. We were playing a little more on the edge.”
Budaj started his ninth straight game filling in for Craig Anderson(notes), who has been out since hurting his knee in pregame warmups on Oct. 26. Anderson could be nearing a return as he took shots at the morning skate on Monday. Avalanche coach Joe Sacco said Anderson is “progressing.”
Down 3-1 in the second period, the Blues climbed back into wholesale NFL jerseys the game on Colaiacovo’s second goal of the season.
The Avalanche countered with two goals in a 17-second span, their fastest stretch since Oct. 22, 2005.
Yip started the spree with a goal that was initially waved off. The referee ruled that the puck hit off Yip’s hands on a pass from Duchene. After a lengthy review, it was determined that the puck struck Yip’s torso and allowed the goal to stand.
Colorado came right back with another as Jones skated in on Halak and beat him with a shot over the shoulder. Adam Foote(notes) was credited with an assist on the goal, moving him ahead of Sandis Ozolinsh(notes) for most points by a defenseman in franchise history.
A big momentum swing.
“Every goalie can tell you that playing with the lead is always mentally better,” Budaj said. “When you have a comfortable cushion you tend to settle down, and I think our team played really well.”
As for the Blues’ recent struggles against the Avs, coach Davis Payne was at a loss for an explanation.
“I don’t know what it is about this building. We’ve got to haul our own water in maybe from St. Louis,” Payne said.NFL jerseys “We’ve got to make ourselves a little bit more aware of what the dangers are that exist at the other end of the hall.”
NOTES: Blues F David Perron(notes) (concussion) missed his sixth straight game. … Avalanche F David Koci(notes) (jaw) skated Monday morning without a protective bar on his helmet, but was scratched along with D Jonas Holos(notes).

49ers coach opts for ‘hot hand’ at QB: Troy Smith

Attention, everyone: Niners coach Mike Singletary has an announcement to make in the starting quarterback case of Alex Smith vs. Troy Smith.
“As of right now, Smith will be the starter.”
Mike Singletary, ladies and gentlemen – he’ll be here all week. So will the Smith named Troy, who Singletary named his starting quarterback for Sunday’s game against Tampa Bay at Candlestick Park.
Alex Smith was medically cleared Monday after missing two games with a separated left shoulder. He didn’t get his starting job for at least this week because Troy Smith went 2-0 as his replacement.
“We’re going week to week,” Singletary said in his return to seriousness. “I just feel our team understands that I’m going to go with the guy that is winning right now. I’m going to go with the guy that has the hot hand … that has made the difference in the past two weeks.”
Singletary announced the decision after discussing the move with his staff and meeting with both Smiths in the morning.
All offseason, Singletary stood up for Alex Smith as his uncontested and unchallengeable starting quarterback. Singletary named the former No. 1 overall draft pick a team captain and stuck with him during an 0-5 start.
Troy Smith, who signed with the 49ers after training camp, was never considered an option until Alex Smith busted his shoulder Week 7 at Carolina and backup David Carr struggled off the bench.
Singletary started Troy Smith on Oct. 31 against Denver in London, and he rallied the 49ers to a 24-16 victory. His follow-up Sunday was all the more impressive: 356 passing yards, 20.1 yards per completion, and no turnovers for the second straight game.
Singletary had no real choice Monday. Troy Smith made the decision for him against the Rams, and even Alex Smith knew it.
“Yeah, seeing what he did, I was ready for whatever was going to happen today,” said Alex Smith, who stood up before reporters to discuss his benching. “He’s played well the past two weeks and we’ve won, so I was ready for anything.”
Now, Troy Smith can get ready knowing the job is his cheap football jerseys .
“Feels pretty good, but I’m going to attack it the same way we always do,” Troy Smith said. “That has no bearing in the way we’re going to prepare.”
If anyone in the locker room favored one Smith over the other, they must have been told to keep it to themselves.
“Whatever Coach says,” wide receiver Michael Crabtree said.
“Whatever he wants to do, I’m all for it, 100 percent,” tight end Vernon Davis said.
“Coach Singletary says that’s what we got to go with, then that’s what we’re going to roll with,” running back Frank Gore said. “I think Troy’s doing a great job. He won two games.
“The way it happened, he got injured, Alex is a good guy and I love him. He just didn’t get a break. I know whenever he steps on the field, he’ll be hungry, he’ll be ready to play.”
If Troy Smith keeps this up, Alex Smith might not play another game for the 49ers. The sixth-year player is in the final year of his contract. The longer Troy Smith keeps the 49ers in the NFC West race, the less chance Alex Smith has of getting off the bench.
“I certainly felt I played well all season,” Alex Smith said. “Obviously, wholesale NFL Jerseys the turnovers were in my mind as the thing that really hurt me and the team. Really felt in the last few weeks I was moving in the right direction. Doesn’t really matter at this point.
“Moving forward, you can’t really dwell on that stuff.”

Ryan rescues Falcons

Atlanta’s Matt Ryan (left) and Roddy White celebrate their 33-yard winning touchdown pass play.

ATLANTA — In the end, the Falcons had a little more push.
Roddy White made some room for himself and hauled in a 33-yard touchdown pass from Matt Ryan with 20 seconds remaining as Atlanta, after squandering a 13-point lead in the fourth quarter, rallied to beat Baltimore, 26-21, last night.
“If you like football, like intense football, that was it,’’ said Falcons coach Mike Smith, a former Ravens assistant. “That might have been the most intense game I’ve ever been involved with at any level of football.’’
The Falcons (7-2) appeared to be in control after Ryan hooked up with White on a 4-yard touchdown with 11:34 remaining to make it 20-7. Curiously, Atlanta coach Mike Smith didn’t attempt a 2-point conversion, which nearly came back to bite him.
After barely touching the ball in the first half, Baltimore (6-3) rallied behind Joe Flacco’s two TD passes, the second of them a 9-yarder to Todd Heap with 1:05 left.
Back came the Falcons, who improved to 18-1 at home with Ryan as the starter. He needed less than a minute to pull off an 80-yard drive, hooking up with Michael Jenkins on a huge third-down pass along the sideline before going back to his favorite receiver for the winner.
Ryan rolled to his left to get away from the pressure, and White shoved off Josh Wilson with his right hand to get free, sending the cornerback tumbling to the turf. Ryan delivered the ball perfectly, White caught it with no one around, cheap football jerseys and he cruised into the end zone.
Wilson hopped up, screaming for a penalty. But the official kept the yellow flag in his back pocket and held up both arms.
White knew he got away with one.
“Yeah, you’ve got to do whatever you’ve got to do to win,’’ he said. “I’m going to leave it up to the referee.’’
White came into the game listed as questionable after hurting his right knee last Sunday and practicing only once during the short week. But he danced out of the tunnel during the pregame introductions with a big smile and clearly wasn’t bothered.
He finished with 12 catches for 138 yards. Ryan threw a career-high 50 passes, completing 32 for 316 yards and three touchdowns.
“After they scored, we were on the sideline. Wholesale NFL Jerseys We just looked at each other and smiled, man,’’ White said. “We just relish moments like this. We knew we were going to go down there and get what we needed to win this game.’’
Flacco was 22 of 34 for 215 yards and three touchdowns, too.
“It was crazy,’’ he said. “You think it’s your game. You think it’s over.’’

Shawne Merriman won’t play for Buffalo this weekend

Coach Chan Gailey and the winless Buffalo Bills will have to wait a little longer before formally welcoming newly acquired outside linebacker Shawne Merriman.
And it will be at least another week before the onetime feared pass rusher will have a chance to make his debut.
A day after acquiring Merriman off waivers, Gailey announced after practice Thursday that the player is tentatively scheduled to report to the team Friday. Gailey also ruled out Merriman from playing in Buffalo’s game against Chicago (4-3) at Toronto on Sunday.
Under NFL rules, players claimed on waivers have five days to report to their new team.
Looking forward, Gailey said that should Merriman pass all of his necessary physicals and depending how fresh he looks in practice next week, there’s a chance the player could play against Detroit on Nov. 14.
“Mentally, it won’t be that hard, because he’s used to the 3-4 defense and what we’re doing,” Gailey said. “So it depends on what kind of shape he’s in. And that will determine how much, if any, he plays.”
San Diego’s 2005 first-round draft pick, Merriman was waived by the Chargers on Tuesday, three weeks after he was put on injured reserve because of a calf injury. The injury was designated as minor, meaning Merriman was to be released once he was deemed healthy by the Chargers.
The Bills (0-7) added Merriman in a bid to improve a defense that has struggled against the run and has had difficulty generating a pass rush.
“Any time you can pick up a quality player, it doesn’t matter what position it is, you’ve helped your football team,” Gailey said. “We’re just fortunate that this guy has a lot of tools. It’s not just a few things, he’s got a lot of tools.”
Colts’ Session has broken arm
Indianapolis Colts linebacker Clint Session has a broken arm.
Session’s agent, Harold Lewis, said the fourth-year player cheap football jerseys dislocated his right elbow and broke his right forearm during Monday night’s victory over Houston.
Session left the game after making a tackle on Andre Johnson in the first half, but he returned later and finished the game.
The Colts have not provided an update. Lewis says he cannot confirm rumors that Session has been put on season-ending injured reserve, though he did not practice Wednesday or Thursday.
The Colts already have 11 players on injured reserve.
Steelers’ Harrison fined for late hit
Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker James Harrison was fined $20,000 for a late hit on New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees, the third time he has been fined this season for a dangerous tackle.
The penalties total $100,000, including a $75,000 fine for his Oct. 17 helmet hit that left Browns wide receiver Mohamed Massaquoi with a concussion.
“The amount of money is becoming an issue,” Harrison said Thursday. “The fines that they issued to me, two of them weren’t even called penalties. I don’t even know what to say anymore.”
The $75,000 fine was issued two weeks ago, when the NFL adopted its tougher stance on hits to the head and neck — a policy that caused Harrison to briefly consider retiring.
Harrison also was fined $5,000 for slamming Titans quarterback Vince Young to the turf Sept. 19. Neither the Massaquoi play nor the Young play drew a penalty.
After Harrison slammed into Brees’ back during Pittsburgh’s 20-10 loss Sunday night, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell summoned the three-time Pro Bowl linebacker to New York on Tuesday to talk about the NFL’s stricter enforcement of dangerous hits. Harrison termed the meeting “semi-productive,” and said it included a discussion of the Brees hit.
The league told Harrison he put his facemask into Brees’ back after the quarterback delivered a pass, causing Harrison to draw a roughing the passer penalty.
“If you look at the picture, it looks like my head is off to the left, but maybe they had a different view of it,” Harrison said. “Or maybe they’re just listening to the [TV] commentators.”
Bush practices with Saints
Reggie Bush was limited during the Saints’ practice, wholesale NFL jerseys raising his prospects for getting back in the lineup for the first time since breaking a bone in his lower right leg in the second game of the season.
Coach Sean Payton says Bush is making a lot of progress but is still not moving the way he would like.
