They appear fatigued, Pau Gasol in particular, against the Pacers, who hold off L.A.’s late rally and end their 14-game losing streak at Staples Center.
Plenty has happened in the 11-year history of Staples Center, be it a bevy of championship Lakers teams, an armful of losing Clippers teams and, for the music enthusiasts, a host of memorable concerts, from Bruce Springsteen to U2.
Then there was the latest piece of history, or infamy from the point of view of a Lakers fan.
The Pacers had never beaten the Lakers at Staples Center until Sunday, when they won, 95-92, to break an 0-14 skid that included three playoff losses in 2000.
Kobe Bryant had a season-high 41 points, but Pau Gasol was firmly outplayed by Pacers center Roy Hibbert, and the Lakers’ reserves again abandoned the cause, failing to get the best of the Pacers’ backups.
The Lakers looked tired, or uninterested, or something. They trailed, 51-45, at halftime and by 15 in the third quarter.
Weird night for the home team, in many ways.
It started with Gasol, who had 13 points on five-for-15 shooting and looked fatigued during another heavy-minute night. His assignment, Hibbert, had 24 points, NBA Jerseys shooting nine for 13.
Gasol is averaging 39 minutes a game after a restful summer in which he didn’t play for the Spanish national team for the first time in five years. But he didn’t look fresh Sunday.
“We really saw it tonight,” Lakers Coach Phil Jackson said. “I thought there was a number of situations where he really didn’t get a good base to shoot his shot from or make a good play out of. Probably fatigue more than anything else.”
Gasol was a step slow on the deciding play of the game, losing track of Hibbert in a pick-and-roll set and watching helplessly as Hibbert dunked with 16.4 seconds left. The Pacers’ three-point lead stood up after Bryant missed two three-point attempts in the final seconds, including a 29-footer with 0.9 seconds to play.
The word of the night was lethargy.
“In some ways I feel more tired than others,” said Gasol, who played 45 minutes Sunday. “It’s a reality, but I don’t complain about it. I saw the Detroit [double-overtime] game against New York. Amare Stoudemire played 54 minutes and I don’t think he got asked [about it]. Obviously I’m averaging quite a few minutes and I’m out there for a while. Gasol was 10th in the league in average minutes coming into Sunday.
The Lakers (13-4) were hurt by their inability to rebound late in the game, the Pacers (8-7) scoring on three consecutive possessions after they got at least one offensive rebound.
There were other issues for the Lakers. Ron Artest looked a step slow on offense, scoring three points in 26 minutes, and Shannon Brown had another bad shooting night, making only two of nine attempts.
The Lakers reserves were outscored by Indiana’s, 24-14, and Derek Fisher continued a recent shooting slide, making two of eight.
Bryant didn’t shoot all that well, making 14 of 33, but he was irritated by the Lakers’ lack of defensive detail. “We’re going to score points. But defensively, we have to sharpen that up.”
The Lakers, who are 5-4 since their 8-0 start, don’t have much time to tinker with their defense or rest their big men. They’re in Memphis on Tuesday and Houston on Wednesday before getting a break with one game in five days.
“I thought we played a lethargic game,” Jackson said. “I thought they outhustled us and obviously it paid off for them in a win.”

LOS ANGELES — In the Los Angeles Lakers’ third game of the preseason, Lamar Odom served as a lab rat for the NBA’s new technical foul rule, picking up what he described as one of the “weirdest technicals I’ve ever gotten” for keeping his arm raised for too long after being whistled for a foul against the Sacramento Kings.

That technical occurred in the second quarter of an exhibition game and cost him $2,000. The technical foul that Odom was called for late in the fourth quarter of the Lakers’ 121-116 loss to the Phoenix Suns on Sunday might have cost his team the game.
Odom absorbed contact from Hedo Turkoglu as he made a layup with 53.7 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter to cut Phoenix’s lead to 111-109. Odom spun around and signaled to referee Ron Garretson that he should have been awarded an and-one call and a chance to bring the Lakers to within one at the foul line. Instead, Odom’s reaction drew a technical foul from referee Tony Brown and Steve Nash made the shot to put the Suns up by three with the ball.
It was a two-point swing that Lakers head coach Phil Jackson said “changed the context of the ballgame.”
Odom explained the play from his viewpoint.
“It looked like Turkoglu was trying to foul me on purpose, I thought,” Odom said. “Actually Ronnie [referee Ron Garretson] was in on the play and I turned to Ronnie [and said] ‘And one!’ and the ref off the ball called it … Probably it looked a little more demonstrative [to him] because my back [was turned to him]. You can’t see me.
“It’s hard to control a normal reaction … He could tell me to get my damn hand down, or ‘What are you doing?’ or something, only because it was at that point in the game.”
On the Suns’ ensuing possession Turkoglu hit a 3-pointer — one of the team-record 22 triples that Phoenix hit on the night — to put the Suns up by six with 34.7 seconds remaining and give them firm control of the game down the stretch.
“I was unhappy about the situation that happened with Lamar,” Jackson said. “I don’t think the NBA wants that type of thing to happen but that’s part of the residual that’s going to happen off of the policy they have.”
Jackson said Turkoglu fouled Odom and his player’s reaction was “normal.”
During the preseason Jackson commended the NBA for cleaning up what he considered to be too much talking in the game, but after the loss Sunday the coach said Odom’s technical went against how the rule change was originally explained by the league.
“Here’s what they said, they said, ‘We expect a normal reaction,’” Jackson said. “‘It’s a game of emotion, we expect a normal reaction but we don’t want continuing bantering.’ So [what Odom did] wasn’t continuing and it was a normal reaction, so that’s why I’m saying we expect better judgment in that situation.”
There was varied reaction to the call in the Lakers’ locker room. On one end of the spectrum, Matt Barnes called it “ridiculous” and Kobe Bryant said it was “disgusting.” Taking the middle ground, Shannon Brown said, “I don’t really know what to say in this situation … I want to save my money.” Odom simply said “a rule’s a rule” and Derek Fisher summed up his thoughts much the same, saying, “It is what it is.”
Bryant was more critical of the rule than the actual call against Odom.
“It’s a bad, bad rule,” Bryant said. “It’s a bad rule.
“It’s subject to so much interpretation. It’s tough. I’ve been toeing the line here so I don’t want to [say much more]. You have to [think about the rule when you play] now. It’s something you have to be conscious about as a player which kind of throws you off your game a little bit because basketball is such an emotional sport and you have to think about it a little bit.”
When asked if the league should revisit the new rule or even drop it all together as it did early in the 2006-07 season after adopting a similarly strict technical policy, Bryant said, “Yes, they should … I mean, it’s a bad one.”
Even Phoenix head coach Alvin Gentry disagreed with the call, even if it helped his team.
“That’s one of those things that I think is really tough,” Gentry said. “A guy shows a little bit of emotion, I don’t know if it may have been the thing to do, NBA Jerseys but it’s the rule … If you’re asking me if I like the call, I don’t particularly like the call but the rule is what it is.”
Said Jackson: “[When] you stop the game and change the game around at a critical point in the game like that, [it] is just not the way we want the game to be played. It will even out. People will have better judgment.”

Maybe Kobe Bryant was right. Phil Jackson might owe him an apology.
They had been ensconced in a mild debate since Bryant recently declared himself 100% recovered from off-season knee surgery, a decree Jackson answered with a roll of the eyes.
Then came Wednesday, Bryant had a huge night statistically against the Sacramento Kings, and the gavel could finally be pounded.
The debate was over.
Bryant had 30 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds in the Lakers’ 112-100 victory over Sacramento at Arco Arena.
It was his 17th career triple-double, and it wasn’t the end of his stat line. He was nine of 10 from the free-throw line and committed only one turnover. The one minor critique would have been his accuracy — nine-for-22 shooting — but it was almost nitpicking compared to the rest of his work.
Bryant also set a franchise record two minutes into the game, passing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar for career minutes. Bryant has now logged 37,527 minutes, all with the Lakers, of course.
Jackson said Bryant could still be moving better defensively, but he conceded he “had a terrific night.”
“His shot’s on, he’s got leg strength,” Jackson said. “I still want to see him run freely. But he played a great game.”
Bryant didn’t seem to mind if his coach considered him fully sound.
“I don’t [care] whether he says it or not,” he said. “I’m 100%. It is what it is.”
The Kings (3-2) have been dying to resume their rivalry with the Lakers (5-0), and it might happen one of these seasons, but one overriding sense came out of Wednesday’s game:
Not … quite … there.
The Kings have a nice blend of youth and talent, but second-year guard Tyreke Evans (21 points) couldn’t show much of it after getting in foul trouble, and rookie center DeMarcus Cousins had a bland 11 points and six rebounds.
The Lakers have now won 10 of their last 11 against Sacramento, hardly the stuff of their intense battles almost a decade ago.
Unlike the first few games this season, the Lakers’ reserves didn’t add much of anything, leaving the starters to do it on their own.
Pau Gasol answered with 22 points, Lamar Odom had 18 and Ron Artest had 17. Derek Fisher (11 points) came alive late in the game after the Kings moved within seven, burying a three-pointer and then completing a three-point play on the next possession for a 105-92 lead with 3:14 to play.
Above all else, there was Bryant.
