The Juice: Red Sox lose to O’s again; Papelbon blows save in eighth

1. Red menace: The Boston Red Sox jersey fell to 5-15 in September after the Orioles beat them 7-5 on Tuesday night, with closer Jonathan Papelbon (notes) blowing a save in the eighth inning. Fenway folks probably can’t wait for Robert Andino (notes) to leave; he went 3 for 5 with a three-run double to put the O’s ahead. Did we mention that the Orioles have 90 losses?

Watch Andino get to Papelbon

“It’s on me, no one else,” Papelbon told the assembled media conduits.

You see what happens when managers bring in closers before the ninth? Happy now, one-inning-save haters?!

Pap is mistaken about something, though. Another key to the game was Baltimore’s bullpen pitching six shutout innings, most notably three by Jo-Jo Reyes (notes) . Also: Pedro Strop (notes) might lead the 2012 O’s in holds. He looks great. Conversely, Boston starter Erik Bedard (notes) had a rough night .

2. Super: In the New York Yankees jersey ‘ 5-0 victory, Ivan Nova (notes) kept the Rays in check with seven scoreless innings. He has a 3.09 ERA in 15 starts since June 9 and is apparently the No. 2 starter heading to the playoffs. Also breaking: Curtis Granderson (notes) (3 for 5, four RBIs) is good.

Playoffs reset: The Yanks can clinch the AL East with one more win (or Boston loss), and the Red Sox stayed a game ahead of Tampa Bay in the loss column for the wild card. The Angels, who beat Toronto, gained a game on Boston and are three out.

3. Kicking birds: The unlikely combination of Ryan Theriot (notes) and rookie Adron Chambers (notes) led a comeback for the St. Louis Cardinals , who bolted to an 11-6 win against the Mets thanks to a six-run seventh inning. Theriot hit a two-run double and Chambers followed with a three-run triple to help Team Fredbird keep pace in the wild card race. They’ve won 11 of 13

4. Brave rebound: A night after an unbearable loss, the Atlanta Braves beat the Marlins 4-0 behind rookieRandall Delgado (notes) . Their lead in the wild card race used to be 10 1/2 games, but they’re happy to still be ahead by 2 1/2 with seven games left for themselves and eight for St. Louis.

5. Not Amish, just looks it: Can you feel the momentum for Clayton Kershaw (notes) and the Cy Young Award? He won his 20th game , beating the Giants 2-1. Kenley Jansen (notes) cut off a rally in the eighth by striking out pinch-hitter Pablo Sandoval (notes) and Carlos Beltran (notes) .

6. It was nice: The Giants didn’t fall any further behind the Arizona Diamondbacks , who lost 5-3 to Charlie Morton (notes) and the Pirates. But they are about out of time. Arizona’s magic number is three.

7. Clench, not clinch: The champagne cocktail party the Philadelphia Phillies are planning has been delayed. The dastardly Washington Nationals beat them 4-3 in 10 innings and 3-0 to sweep a doubleheader at Citizens Bank Park.

8. The West was still: The AL West remains unchanged after the Texas Rangers jersey beat the A’s 7-2 with the help of an Adrian Beltre (notes) three-run home run. The Los Angeles Angels beat the Blue Jays 10-6 with Mark Trumbo (notes) getting home run No. 29 . Jays lefty Brett Cecil (notes) pitched poorly in his first post-blender start.

Dustin Pedroia: Chicago White Sox End Pedroia’s 25-Game Hit Streak

Boston Red Sox Jersey second baseman Dustin Pedroia went hitless for the first time since June 28 as the Chicago White Sox out-dueled the young All-Star, who went 0-for-4 for the night, ending his 25-game hitting streak.
Just before Friday night’s game in Chicago, White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen told reporters his team would end Pedroia’s career-high hitting streak. Guillen joked that he saw Pedroia in Cirque du Soleil, threatened to walk Pedroia just to end his hitting streak and called Pedroia a “little midget” while talking with NESN’s Heidi Watney.
After Boston suffered the 3-1 defeat to the White Sox, Pedroia reflected on the streak, which ended nine games shy of the club record.
“Yeah, it’s tough to keep [the streak] going that long,” he said. “The pitchers that we face, they have great stuff, so day in and day out, it’s difficult to do. It was cool. It’s good that I’ve been that consistent. I’ve just got to keep it going.”
During the 31-day streak, Pedroia went 44-for-109 at the plate—an impressive .404 average—blasted nine home runs, hit nine doubles, drove in 20 RBI and accounted for 27 runs across the plate.
It also ends the longest streak in the American League this year and the longest in Boston’s history for a second baseman and is tied for the 11th-longest overall by a player donning a Red Sox jersey.

Red Sox pitcher Tim Wakefield was also denied his 200th career win as Chicago’s A.J. Pierzynski connected on a 65 mph knuckleball in the bottom half of the seventh inning and air-mailed it over the right-field wall.
“That was the best knuckleball I’ve ever seen him throw since I’ve watched him. And I’ve faced him a bunch,” Pierzynski said after the game. “It was just dropping—moving left, right, up and down. People don’t understand how hard it is to hit that…They don’t really realize how hard it is to actually hit that thing.”
Wakefield, who now owns a 6-4 record on the season, allowed three hits in seven innings. After a wild pitch in the sixth, Paul Konerko hit a sacrifice fly to bring home the tying run. He later walked Carlos Quentin to start the bottom of the seventh before Pierzynski hit the go-ahead home run.
The Red Sox played without major league RBI and batting average leader Adrian Gonzalez, who was a late lineup scratch with a stiff neck.
Boston will play the White Sox throughout the weekend before heading back for a home stand against the Cleveland Indians Jersey on Aug. 1.

Team Preview:Boston Red Sox

Prettay, prettay, prettaaaay good. It’s not easy to lose Victor Martinez and Adrian Beltre and actually get better, but that’s what the Boston Red Sox Jersey figure to do. With all due respect to Crawford and his improving offensive game, Gonzalez is the prize here. His power plays to all fields, such that a season with a Green Monster-assisted 80 extra-base hits is well within reach.
The bigger source of upside, though, would be better health for lineup linchpins Kevin Youkilis and Dustin Pedroia. Mr. Laser Show put up a strong .377 wOBA last season, but played in just 75 games. Injuries also hurt the Jewish God of Walks, as Youkilis played in just 102 games while posting a stellar .411 wOBA. If both players replicate those rates of production over a full season, the Red Sox would get a huge boost.
There are question marks at the bottom of the order. J.D. Drew took a step back last season, and even his most ardent defenders (I’m one of them) have to wonder if injuries might finally get the best of him. Marco Scutaro‘s numbers were way down from 2009 levels, and the Red Sox have little reason to expect anything special from their shortstop either. On the other hand, Boston’s minor league depth produced two potentially worthy replacements in Ryan Kalish and Jed Lowrie, should the incumbent starters get hurt or fail to produce. Boston’s stuck at catcher if Jarrod Saltalamacchia doesn’t meet the expectations set forth a few years ago. But Theo Epstein has shown a willingness to aggressively make moves if needed. As is, an absolutely stacked two-through-six should hide many of the ills that might befall the lineup’s lesser hitters. MLB Jerseys The defense should also be strong, with Crawford and Gonzalez adding two Gold Glove-caliber defenders to the lineup; well, one glove anyway, with those two signing on and Beltre leaving.
