Lakers Winning Streak Ends at Nine

The Lakers played sloppy, shot the ball poorly, Pau Gasol hurt his knee, and they lost the services of Andrew Bynum late. All of that added up to a disappointing 95-90 loss to the Denver Nuggets on Sunday afternoon at Staples Center.

Kobe Bryant jersey scored 28 points, but shot just 10-27 from the floor, and was clearly bothered by the Nuggets’ aggressive defense against him, and the lack of foul calls.

The Lakers also got a huge scare when Gasol went down clutching his knee after taking a hard foul on a made basket in the third quarter.  He briefly went to the locker room, but did return to finish the game.  Team officials have said he will have a precautionary MRI on Monday.   Gasol finished the game with 16 points and 12 rebounds, but clearly didn’t have the same impact on the game after injuring his knee.

Bynum also left the game Sunday with seven minutes left after tweaking his knee on a collision with Lamar Odom.  He appeared to grab his knee on the bench, but said after the game he was fine and expects to play on Tuesday against Utah.  He scored eight points and grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds.

The Los Angeles Lakers led 47-40 at halftime in a very uneven game, with neither team shooting the ball well.  The second half was a grind, the Lakers held the lead late in the third until Denver went on a run, and briefly grabbed the advantage.  The score was tied at 69 at the end of the quarter.

The Lakers opened up a 75-69 lead early in the fourth, but the Nuggets took over from there.  Point guard Raymond Felton scored all 16 of his points in the second half, including several key buckets down the stretch to keep Denver ahead.

With Denver up 91-83, the Lakers scored four straight and had the ball with under a minute left, but Bryant missed a tough baseline shot.  The Nuggets split two free throws to go up 92-87.   Odom, who had 17 points and seven rebounds off the bench, hit a three-pointer with 16 seconds left to bring the Lakers to within two.  After Nene made his first free throw, he missed the second, and Kenyon Martin forced Odom under the basket to grab the putback, which effectively closed the door on the Lakers’ winning streak.

For the game the Lakers shot just 42.9% (36-84) from the floor and 4-18 (22.2%) from beyond the arc.  They outrebounded Denver 45-44, but were undone by the 20 turnovers they committed.  The Nuggets shot just 43.9% (36-82) from the field themselves, and turned the ball over 17 times as well.

Danilo Gallanari led the Nuggets with 22 points and seven rebounds.  Kenyon Martin had 18 points and eight rebounds, and Nene scored 12 to go along with seven boards.

The loss dropped the Lakers 2.5 behind the Spurs for first in the Western Conference with six games left.  The Lakers are now 17-2 since the All-Star break.

The champs’ next game is Tuesday night at Staples Center against the Utah Jazz jersey, who were eliminated from the playoff race on Friday by the Lakers.  After Tuesday’s game, the Lakers go on the road at Golden St. on Wednesday,  and then Portland on Friday.

Wow.
If there was ever a glimmer of hope that this team could make the playoffs it was certainly squashed last night at the Dome. The past three games against Phoenix jersey and Vancouver have been (wait for it) the most important games of the season. We all know that, and the players know that. However, for certain players to not step up when absolutely necessary (hairy eyeball at Bouwmeester, Regehr and Iginla) is – as Sutter put it – completely unacceptable.
It was so frustrating to see what was supposed to be our best defencive pairing be -6 collectively in such an important game. It was equaly frustrating to see the Captain not be able to lift this team onto his shoulders like he was once able. It’s frustrating that we look to guys like Jokinen and Jackman to save the team when it’s struggling.
But the worst of it all is that the Calgary Flames jersey could have very well destroyed all chance of a postseason appearance, something they struggled over 3 months to build up, in three games. The odds for Calgary dropped from nearly 80% to less than 40%. From being in control of your own destiny to relying on other teams to lose. From being able to play 500 Hockey Jerseys and make it, to having to play 700 hockey (7-3) to make it. From being in 4th place in the West and having home-ice advantage, to 8th in the West. By the time the Flames play again they will be in 10th, mark my words.
Sunday’s game becomes the most important game of the year. And who do we have to rely on? With David Moss and Brendan Morrison out for the year, we have Ales Kotalik. We have Lance Bouma. We have Brett Carson. Crap.

They appear fatigued, Pau Gasol in particular, against the Pacers, who hold off L.A.’s late rally and end their 14-game losing streak at Staples Center.
Plenty has happened in the 11-year history of Staples Center, be it a bevy of championship Lakers teams, an armful of losing Clippers teams and, for the music enthusiasts, a host of memorable concerts, from Bruce Springsteen to U2.
Then there was the latest piece of history, or infamy from the point of view of a Lakers fan.
The Pacers had never beaten the Lakers at Staples Center until Sunday, when they won, 95-92, to break an 0-14 skid that included three playoff losses in 2000.
Kobe Bryant had a season-high 41 points, but Pau Gasol was firmly outplayed by Pacers center Roy Hibbert, and the Lakers’ reserves again abandoned the cause, failing to get the best of the Pacers’ backups.
The Lakers looked tired, or uninterested, or something. They trailed, 51-45, at halftime and by 15 in the third quarter.
Weird night for the home team, in many ways.
It started with Gasol, who had 13 points on five-for-15 shooting and looked fatigued during another heavy-minute night. His assignment, Hibbert, had 24 points, NBA Jerseys shooting nine for 13.
Gasol is averaging 39 minutes a game after a restful summer in which he didn’t play for the Spanish national team for the first time in five years. But he didn’t look fresh Sunday.
“We really saw it tonight,” Lakers Coach Phil Jackson said. “I thought there was a number of situations where he really didn’t get a good base to shoot his shot from or make a good play out of. Probably fatigue more than anything else.”

“In some ways I feel more tired than others,” said Gasol, who played 45 minutes Sunday. “It’s a reality, but I don’t complain about it. I saw the Detroit [double-overtime] game against New York. Amare Stoudemire played 54 minutes and I don’t think he got asked [about it]. Obviously I’m averaging quite a few minutes and I’m out there for a while. Bryant didn’t shoot all that well, making 14 of 33, but he was irritated by the Lakers’ lack of defensive detail. “We’re going to score points. But defensively, we have to sharpen that up.”
The Lakers, who are 5-4 since their 8-0 start, don’t have much time to tinker with their defense or rest their big men. They’re in Memphis on Tuesday and Houston on Wednesday before getting a break with one game in five days.
“I thought we played a lethargic game,” Jackson said. “I thought they outhustled us and obviously it paid off for them in a win.”
